RIP 1949-2019

"Art History in Schools is a purposeful and timely initiative, driven and created by passionate professionals to counter the marginalisation of history of art teaching at secondary level and to ensure that every child has access to this great discipline (in which the UK has for so long played a global leading role)."
James Hughes-Hallett,
Chairman of the Courtauld Institute of Art

Art History in Schools CIO was founded in 2015 with the educational, moral and financial support of James, who had previously secured the first ever grant for the Association of Art Historians – to fund the state sector art history programme (known as MSHAP), run by fellow AHiS trustee Caroline Osborne since 2007. As Chairman of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and retired Chairman of the Courtauld Institute of Art, his expertise and advice were invaluable. AHiS is eternally grateful that he dedicated his time and energy, to the very end, to support AHiS teachers writing the National Extension College online A-level in Art History.

Caroline Osborne

Caroline Osborne was a founding trustee of Art History in Schools and has organised the AHiS A-level events for the first five years. She has taught Art History at Sixth Form and Higher Education for over 35 years and was active within the Students and Schools Group of the Association of Art Historians since 1981. A graduate of Nottingham University with an MA from Sussex and a PGCE from the Institute of Education, she ran an AS level outreach programme with several local state schools for 8 years. Caroline works with the National Extension College on their new online History of Art A-level and is the lead tutor for the course.

Laura Worsley

Laura Worsley was a founding trustee of Art History in Schools. She has worked for more than a decade with primary, junior and early secondary teachers and students in the classroom, learning to look carefully at artworks and objects of craft and design using reflection and dialogue to explore visual ideas, history and narratives. She holds a doctorate in Art History Education and a master’s degree in Museum Studies with a strong focus on educational visits. She has run action research projects and workshops with Key Stage 1-2 teachers in state maintained schools and taught Visual Literacy with Art History to students across Key Stages 1-4. Laura works for the International Baccalaureate, as a paper writer and examiner for Art History (P2). She is also employed by Thames and Hudson, as an art history consultant on art-related book projects for primary/secondary children. In addition, Laura sits on the editorial board of the International Journal of Education Through Art and is a reviewer.
