AHiS with Leighton House Museum:

Study Day for Teachers and Sixth Form Students exploring a range of Islamic Art

Aimed at teachers and students of the new Edexcel Global A-level syllabus, this day will focus on key works on the syllabus (Art & Nature, Art & Identities, and Art & War) from Mughal miniatures, to the architecture of Sinan, to contemporary images of the veil as well as exploring Orientalism in the context of Leighton House itself.

 

Provisional Programme:

10.00 Welcome by Charlotte Villiers

10.05 Melanie Gibson, Trustee of Leighton House and associate lecturer, Courtauld Institute: Introduction to Islamic Arts

10.30 Susan Stronge, Senior Curator, Asia Department, Victoria & Albert Museum: Mughal Miniatures

11.15 The architecture of Miman Sinan

12.00 Lunch break (and opportunity to explore the house)

12.45 Gender and Contemporary Islamic Representation - tbc

13.30 Introduction to Calligraphy, and calligraphy workshop in the studio

14.45 Tea break

15.00 Daniel Robbin, Senior Curator, Leighton House: Orientalism, Lord Leighton and his collection

Paid tickets will be reimbursed upon attendance. Donations to the charity are welcome. Suggested donations from private sector: £15 per person.
